16-4-8 is a high Nitrogen lawn fertilizer that promotes growth in all plants. It can be used as both a liquid lawn fertilizer and as a foliar plant fertilizer for gardens and crops. It is meant to be used during the Growth Stage in our 4 Step Garden Fertilizing Program. Nutrients are immediately available and you can expect a very quick color response.
The 16-4-8 is The 16-4-8 is supplemented (Bio-Enhanced) with Nature’s Magic, our natural nutrient package derived from Seaweed, Humic Acids, and Molasses. This gives you additional vitamins, bio-stimulants, and trace elements including Vitamins B-1, B-12, Gibberellins, Indoles, Auxins, Boron, Iron, Zinc, Cobalt, Copper, Manganese, Molybdenum and Sulfur.
FOR USE ON LAWNS: Early morning or late afternoon (avoiding daytime heat) applications work best.
Determine the size of the lawn (length x width) before applying so you will know how much to use at 10-12 oz per 1000 sf. Fill your hose-end sprayer with 16-4-8 and if the sprayer is adjustable, set to 3 oz per gallon. Turn the water on at a medium flow and walk across the yard at a slow to medium pace, soaking the top of the lawn as you spray in a 6-10′ swath.
Go over the lawn as many times as needed until you have used the correct amount of the product. With some trial and error you will learn the best pace to apply it just right.
DO NOT WATER right after the application. Wait 6-8 hours or until the next day.
Apply every 4 weeks at 10-12 oz per 1000 sf on established lawns where clippings are left. If clippings are not left you may need to apply heavier or more often to replace the lost nutrients that come from the clippings. Do not apply when the grass is going dormant or is not growing. On poor quality lawns, or lawns that seem Nitrogen-starved due to pool color you can apply every 2-3 weeks until better health is achieved.
If you have clay or compacted soil, you can mix in some Aerify or Aerify PLUS with each fertilizing until the soil is improved. Our 16-4-8 also makes a great lawn winterizer. And according to Cornell, the winterizer is the 3rd most important fertilizing for lawns.
How Much Do You Need for the Whole Season? Though climate, lawn condition, water, geography and even mowing all play a part in how much fertilizer you will need for a whole season, you can use the guideline of 1/2 – 3/4 gallon of 16-4-8 for every 1000 sf of lawn at the 10-12 oz rate. By purchasing in larger sizes you will save money on both the product and the shipping cost per gallon. Any leftover fertilizer can be sealed and stored to be used next season.
For Foliar Feeding Plants and Gardens
16-4-8 is considered a high nitrogen fertilizer which means it works well for most non-blooming green or leafy plants – including vegetables, house plants, shrubs and even trees. It promotes green growth, as opposed to promoting flowers or fruits. In our 4 Step Garden Fertilizing Program we recommend 16-4-8 be used foliarly (on the leaves) or through drip irrigation during the Growth Stage of your plants, up to the time they begin blossoming. For trees, use during the initial growth flush stage.
Why Foliar Feed?
Plants need different nutrients at different stages of development. Granular fertilizer blends applied pre-planting may or may not release the proper nutrients when they are needed. Nutrient release can be affected by soil compaction and drainage, bio-activity,soil temperature, dry or wet weather, and a host of other factors.
By Foliar Feeding your plants the right nutrients exactly when they are needed you can get better and more predictable results in your garden than you ever thought possible. Foliar feeding is a fast and very economical way to fertilize
RATES: (See Foliar Feeding Information and Tips below)

Foliar Feeding Information and Tips
Foliar (through the leaves) feeding is a great way to get more from your lawns and plantings – even those that have already been fertilized through the ground. Nutrients sprayed correctly on leaves are absorbed quickly and are distributed throughout the whole plant or tree within minutes. This means that you only have to spray some of the leaves to get nutrients to all of the plant, including the roots. This can boost plant health and production dramatically. So, whether you want greener grass, more flowers, more fruits or vegetables, or just more growth from a plant, foliar feeding every two weeks is a great technique for serious gardeners.
- Spray early to late morning for better absorption. Early evening is the next best time.
- Only spray plants that have been watered regularly and are not under drought stress.
- Avoid spraying during the heat of the day or the spray can evaporate before it is absorbed.
- Add some dish soap or our Wetting Agent to help the spray spread and stick better. A fine mist spray sticks best, but hose-end sprayers can be effective if done a little more heavily and during the right time of day.
- Try to reach the underside of leaves because that is where most of the pores (stomata) are.
