Using a lawn sprinkler to water deeper rooted plants, such as shrubs, perennials and trees, is not always a good idea. To water these plants effectively, and get water down into their root-zone (often 6-15 inches deep), you need use an enormous amount of water when a sprinkler is employed. You have to saturate all the soil from the top - down to the feeder roots. The lawn and beds can become a soggy mess - especially when the soil has a lot of clay content. But if you don't water deep enough, the roots will start to come closer to the surface, often robbing from the lawn.
We have a solution to this problem. We are now stocking a Deep-Root Feeder/Irrigator tool that puts water directly into the root zone without waste. This tool allows you to inject holes (up to 14 in. deep) around the root zone of a plant and saturate the area with water. As an example, you can put 30 gallons of water around 3 large shrubs in a bed using 30 holes. It will take about 10-15 minutes. If you used a sprinkler to water those same plants, you would have to leave it on for an hour or two to get the water down as deep. And, since sprinklers spray in a wide pattern, you would probably be wasting water on areas where nothing at all is growing.
Deep-Root watering can save you (and the planet) 100s, if not 1000s of gallons of water yearly, and is a must if you are under water restrictions. You can use it on roses, bushes, trees, perennials and even annuals and vegetables. Did you know that many flowering plants and vegetables (geraniums, begonias, roses, tomatoes, etc…) as well as other shrubs and trees are susceptible to leaf disease and would do better if their leaves stayed drier? Injecting water into the root zone prevents the wet leaf/disease syndrome.
Deep-Root Fertilize too. Professional landscapers and tree care pros use deep-root feeding as their fertilizing method of choice. With our Deep-Root Feeder you can get the same professional quality fertilizing, or maybe much better, using our Bio-Enhanced Liquid Fertilizers (we use our 10-8-8 for trees and shrubs) along with some Aerify! or Aerify Plus. There is a 40 oz. container (similar to a hose end sprayer) that you attach to the feeder, and this allows you to mix liquid products in while you water.
The Deep-Root Feeder is made of lightweight, durable tube steel that is perfect for homeowner use. It has 5 water jets, foam cushioned handles and foot pegs to help insert it into the soil. It comes with full instructions as well as an instructional video. A water pressure regulator is also available if you have high water pressure and need a way to control the flow. If you are a landscaper without a tank sprayer and would like to add Deep-Root Fertilization to your services, you can start with this tool.
